Services we provide
We enable companies and products to offset their not-yet-eliminated emissions in order to reach ‘net zero’. Almost any activity in the modern world results in greenhouse gas emissions. Wind turbines require tonnes of concrete and electric vehicles need minerals which are mined as well as steel which is produced at high temperatures using coal. Even making a cup of tea or turning on your computer results in carbon emissions. This is the reality of net zero versus the false narrative that companies or people could ever reach zero emissions without offsetting.
We work with companies first of all to estimate their greenhouse gas emissions. We have experience doing this for large companies in major projects. Estimating greenhouse gas emissions is not like a financial audit where thousands of invoices need to be reconciled – even sophisticated GHG audits rely on high-level statistics such as per capita emissions in a given country and previously published analyses of the environmental impact of activities such as travel (air travel accounts for 2.5% of emissions but that’s just because billions of people don’t fly at all) or garment production (distribution, especially home delivery, are the major contributors rather than the garment itself).
After estimating a company’s or a product’s emissions we work with the company to choose the offsetting option which best aligns with the corporate brand. For the types of high quality offsets we deal with often the social co-benefit is as important as the carbon emissions reduction. For example, a biogas stove can prevent deforestation (cutting down trees for firewood) but it also makes cooking less damaging to a family’s lungs in the Global South and thus improves their health and life expectancy. For de-risking purposes we can offer a basket of offsets as most carbon offsetting programs involve some risks – for example trees don’t always strongly take root and emerging markets such as Africa or India carry specific risks. The largest risk we manage for our clients is not that trees of biogas stoves are cut down but rather that a project’s assumptions on issues such as additionality (will this carbon credit actually cause carbon reductions), leakage (e.g. will these new trees cause other trees to be chopped down) and double-counting (will someone else, such as a national government, try to take credit for this initiative).
We then work with companies to integrate their chosen carbon offsetting mechanism into their company or product. For example, we can build website widgets giving your users an option to offset a product such as a hotel stay or give users an app to record their activities which a company can then offset on their behalf. Our software engineers have strong experience of building online checkouts and apps, understanding the balance between providing users with access to information to understand their carbon footprint and the relevant offset while not overloading them with information or creating friction that could lead to an abandoned transaction.
